97% of all miniaturized batteries or coin cell batteries end up in landfill or are simply burned, then polluting our planet. Most of them require also rare and toxic materials using non-renewable resources in their production process. Bioenzymatic Fuel Cells offer a sustainable and eco-friendly solution for practical energy generation whilst minimizing impact on the environment. This approach does not only allow the replacement of batteries for existing applications, but also open up new opportunities for low-power ultra-thin health monitoring, logistics/transportation monitoring, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications by powering dedicated sensors and biosensors (for monitoring & tracking activities: shock, temperature, humidity, pressure, biological conditions ...). Thanks to selected enzymes, sugar and oxygen are transformed into electricity using a natural bio-catalysis. This phenomenon is similar to the one taking place in the human body.
