At Ecco Nova, sustainability is at the core of our mission. Our goal is to facilitate the financing of the energy transition through the development of the collaborative economy. By proposing to finance sustainable projects to individuals through loans, we want to make Ecology and Economy rhyme. Similarly to the companies that we invest in, we want Ecco Nova to lead by example. By partnering up with Tapio, we walk the talk and confirm our leadership status in this field.
Pierre-Yves Pirlot, Co-Founder & Project Leader at Ecco Nova.
Tackling climate change is an everyday battle that might seem overwhelming. However, this ambitious goal becomes the most likely scenario once businesses work together in the same direction.
Once Ecco Nova measured their greenhouse emissions and understood their actual impact as a whole, designing an action plan was just as straightforward. The next step was to set ambitious targets to reduce their footprint and connect with the right partners to make it possible. Now Ecco Nova is taking part in cutting the world's emissions to zero.
Every positive action counts, no matter how little. However, climate change needs to be confronted collectively, as many other global challenges humanity has faced in the past. Embracing this approach, the opportunity to involve team members within their company to analyse its impact is priceless. The decision-makers will take climate action by being part of the impact team.

Human activities since the industrial revolution have led to the appearance of new sources of GHGs. Tapio’s all-in-one carbon management solution allows you to estimate the amount of industrial emissions (aka. anthropogenic greenhouse gases) emitted by the activities of your company or organisation.
Discover our Key Findings
The first step to compute a carbon report is to target and characterize the possible sources of GHGs emission from the organization. To do so, must be fixed beforehand by the reporting company.
Then, the breakdown of total carbon emissions by scope helps Ecco Nova highlight the different hotspots that drive its carbon emissions. To address a problem, you need to be able to understand and measure it.
CO2 Logic Carbon Report 2019
1 journey Brussels - Paris
by train (263km)
0,0088 kg CO₂ e / km*passenger
2,3 kg CO₂e
t CO₂ Emission per driver
t CO₂ e
The evolution is calculated on the previous year, based on total emissions.
Following the GHG Protocol, carbon emissions are divided into 3 main scopes, depending on their sources.
Scope 1 takes into account direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the organization, while in scope 2, we found only indirect emissions associated with the production of electricity, heat or steam. Scope 3, on the other hand, represents indirect emissions produced by the company’s activities that are not accounted for in Scope 2 but are related to their whole value chain, like in the case of business travel, or commuting.
Scope 1 : 0 %
Scope 2 : 0 %
Scope 3 : 0 %
Be able to analyse the top 5 most significant sources of emissions, sorted by category/driver, enabled Tapio to understand exactly what drives its carbon emissions and where is necessary to act.
Use the arrows below to learn more about them.
Going a step further in terms of comparison is useful to understand what Ecco Nova’s total amount of carbon emissions represents in day-to-day, tangible situations. Knowing how many long haul flights or how many burgers Ecco Nova’s carbon emissions are equal to is another good way to understand its footprint. If you're curious about what a ton of CO₂ represents, read more about it on our blog.

Discover our Action Plan
After having measured their greenhouse gas emissions and analysed these results, Ecco Nova understood their environmental impact as a whole. To transform hope into action, they needed a reduction plan. By setting ambitious targets to reduce their carbon footprint, Tapio will take part in limiting temperatures to 1.5°C.
Implementing sustainable solutions that will substantially reduce a company's carbon footprint is the first essential step; however, each climate journey is unique. To fulfil their climate ambitions, Ecco Nova needed to compensate for their remaining carbon budget.
Your emissions vs carbon sequestrated in time
The core aim of the project is to transition conventional Belgian and French farms to regenerative agriculture. Expert agronomists are working with up to 1,600 farmers to implement the following regenerative techniques: reduce tillage practices; use cover crops between cash crops; rotate crops with nitrogen-fixing legumes; avoid monocultures; swap to organic fertilisers, like manure; and in some cases create agroforestry systems where trees are planted on arable fields. The typical minimum size of farms is around 100-200 hectares and each farmer is eligible to participate in a sequence of 5-year projects for up to 20 years as this is how long the IPCC advises mineral soils can continue to sequester carbon.
